The meeting point of four major routes in northern Queensland, The Lynd Junction, might seem to be miles from anywhere but it has all the necessities of civilisation - even Telstra network mobile phone coverage! In fact, it’s one of those gems that seems to have it all, right down to licensed premises incorporating Australia’s smallest bar.

The Oasis Roadhouse, which is open seven days from 7.00am to 9.00pm (only closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, offers fuel (unleaded and diesel), rooms from basic to en suited, powered caravan sites and camping sites, wifi and a café that serves truckstop meals. Campers and caravanners are well catered for, including a camp kitchen and a fireplace in the middle of the camping area

Enjoy a drink or two at the bar. But be warned: Only three patrons can stand at the bar at any one time.
The Lynd is about 130km from the Undara Lava Tubes and just 80km from the Einasleigh Hotel and Copperfield Gorge. Only 30km from the roadhouse is a great fishing and camping spot on the Einasleigh River. With ghost gums and a huge waterhole, it’s a very picturesque spot. It’s only a half-hour drive from the roadhouse, so even if you’re camping there you can pop over for dinner at the Oasis.

Within about 90km of The Lynd are fossicking areas where you could find gold, agate and moonstones. Keen sapphire fossickers should also learn about private properties north of The Lynd where they can ask permission to fossick. If you’re planning on scouting around the Moonstone Hill Feldspar Locality (95km south on the Kennedy Highway), make sure you get your fossicker’s licence at Mount Surprise or one of the major towns.
From The Lynd you can go north to Mount Garnet, west to Forsayth, southeast through Greenvale (60km away) to Charters Towers or southwest to Hughenden, seeing Porcupine Gorge on the way.
